Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour Visits Edisto Island, SC

    March 17, 2025 @ 10:00 am–3:00 pm

Join us on Monday, March 17th, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of General Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Edisto Island, South Carolina. The festivities will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society, the South Carolina Historical Society, and the American Friends of Lafayette.

Activities will include a visit to the William Seabrook House, the Graveyard of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island, and the Edisto Island Museum. A Lafayette reenactor will be at the Seabrook House.

Tickets are $40 each, and the number is limited. They may be purchased here, and the deadline for purchase is Monday, March 10th.

During Lafayette’s national tour in 1824, he was invited by William Seabrook to visit Edisto Island and arrived on March 17th. Seabrook was a very successful cotton planter who was at one point the wealthiest man in the United States. During his visit, Lafayette bestowed the name Carolina Lafayette on Seabrook’s newborn daughter.

The Seabrook House, built in 1810, will be open for a visit. In addition to the beautiful house, slave cabins, a private steamboat landing, and formal gardens, there was also a cotton gin operating there by 1825. The house and cotton gin are the only two remaining structures from the Seabrook era. Tradition holds that James Hoban, the architect of the White House, designed the Seabrook House. The house was used as headquarters for the Union Army, and examples of graffiti written by Federal troops remain on the walls and doors.

The Seabrook House is a private home and remains in immaculate condition.

The Presbyterian Church graveyard is the site of Carolina Lafayette Seabrook Hopkinson’s grave; she died in 1879. There is also a Seabrook family plot, and ticket holders will be allowed to take a guided tour of the entire historic graveyard.

Visitors to the Edisto Island Museum will be able to learn about Edisto Island’s rich history, including a new exhibit on the Gullah culture of the island. The Island’s planters became incredibly wealthy from the cultivation of sea island cotton, and at one time, the population was over 80% enslaved. The Gullah are descendants of these enslaved persons who made this wealth possible. Carolina Lafayette Seabrook’s bridal veil is also on display in the Museum, along with numerous artifacts from the days when William Seabrook owned his beautiful home.

Another important artifact in the Museum is a portion of a slave cabin from Point of Pines Plantation, located on the island. A “sister” cabin was donated by the Museum to the Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.

    DATE – Monday, March 17th
    PLACE – Edisto Island, SC

    • Augusta, Georgia - Joseph Lamar House

    ($40, space is limited)

Join us for a special luncheon in honor of General Lafayette at the historic Joseph Lamar House, 415 7th Street. Built in 1860 by William Salisbury, the home was later purchased by Emily H. Tubman as the parsonage for the First Christian Church, where Reverend James S. Lamar served as pastor. His son, Joseph Rucker Lamar, lived in this house from the age of three until 18.

During his childhood, Joseph developed a close friendship with Thomas "Tommy" Woodrow Wilson, the future 28th President of the United States, who lived next door in the Presbyterian Manse.

Emily Tubman lived through a remarkable era. Born in 1794, her life spanned from the presidency of George Washington to that of Grover Cleveland. A distinguished philanthropist and humanitarian, she built churches, managed a thriving plantation, and emancipated her enslaved workers before abolition was legally mandated. In an interview with the Augusta Chronicle in 1885, Mrs. Tubman recalls decorating and contributing a coverlet to ensure his quarters were fine enough, and recalls "I had the pleasure of an introduction to General Lafayette and the honor of shaking his hand."

By 1995, the Joseph Lamar House had fallen into disrepair. Recognizing its historical significance, Historic Augusta, Inc. acquired the property and undertook extensive restoration efforts. In 2004, the beautifully restored home became the organization’s headquarters and now also serves as the visitor center for the Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson, located next door.

Walton, one of Georgia’s most distinguished patriots, resided here from 1791 until his passing in 1804. In 1821, the Walton family moved south into the Florida Territory. Recognizing its significance, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution acquired the property in 1901, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.

Today, the Georgia State Society Daughters of the American Revolution proudly stewards this historic treasure.

Although Lafayette did not visit Meadow Garden during his 1825 tour, he undoubtedly knew George Walton personally. One Walton family member did greet the Marquis! In the 1861 book Women of the South Distinguished in Literature the signer's granddaughter, Octavia Walton, recalls traveling to Mobile, Alabama, to see the General in person. Her admiration reflects the deep reverence many early Americans held for the Marquis and his unwavering devotion to the cause of liberty.

To commemorate Lafayette’s enduring legacy, the Georgia State Society DAR is graciously opening this historic house museum, Meadow Garden, at no charge for this special occasion.

Tour Walton’s historic home, meet our Lafayette reenactor as he mingles among visitors for photos and conversation, and engage in family-friendly activities celebrating our shared revolutionary history. This immersive event takes place on the grounds of Fort Moore, a site that, in 1825, was part of the Creek Nation. The reenactment features actor Charles Wissinger portraying General Lafayette and Dr. Gary McIntosh, a direct descendant of Chief McIntosh, bringing authenticity and depth to this significant encounter.

This reenactment offers a rare opportunity to experience a significant historical event through the eyes of those who lived it. The presence of Dr. Gary McIntosh, a direct descendant of Chief McIntosh, adds a personal and poignant connection to the reenactment, enriching the experience for all attendees.

Pre-registration is required to access Fort Moore.

Following the reenactment, guests will be guided around Lawson Field where they can stop to view the exact spot where Lafayette's entourage crossed the Chattahoochee.  From there, you will be guided to the bridge that connects Fort Moore to the area near Fort Mitchell for the festivities to begin at 2:00 ET.

Don't miss this chance to immerse yourself in a pivotal moment of American history and witness the convergence of two cultures during a transformative period.

    • Fort Mitchell, AL

Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime event as we welcome reenactors portraying the Marquis de Lafayette, Creek leader Chilly McIntosh, and Indian Agent John Crowell!

Begin your journey at the Visitors Center, where you can watch a short film about Fort Mitchell and view the detailed diorama depicting Lafayette’s historic visit.

At 2:00 PM (ET), the grand parade will assemble at the Visitors Center and proceed to the Pavilion. We encourage attendees to don 1825-era period attire and march alongside members of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.), as well as Masons, artisans playing bagpipes, and men and women on horseback escorting General Lafayette’s carriage. We also anticipate a special appearance by the Fort Moore Military Band.

At the Pavilion, distinguished guests will deliver formal greetings, and a proclamation will be read in honor of Lafayette’s visit. The SAR will present the colors and fire a musket volley in a stirring tribute.

Throughout the fort, experience the sights and sounds of early 19th-century life. Skilled artisans, including blacksmiths, tanners, woodworkers, and open-fire cooks, will offer live demonstrations. Creek Indian reenactors will showcase a traditional stickball game, providing insight into their rich cultural heritage. A historic cannon will be on display for photos—and if permitted, it will be fired.

For younger guests, we will have crafts, face painting, and engaging family-friendly activities.

Refreshments will be available at the Tavern.

Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to witness history come to life!

Lafayette visited the Eagle Tavern on his way through Buffalo.  Entrepreneur Benjamin Rathburn made it the finest stagecoach stop and public gathering place west of New York City.

The Eagle was on the west side of Main below Court Street (where the Liberty Building is now).  It was part of the blossoming of Buffalo’s Main Street, with theatres and hotels, serving notice that a more refined urban life was in the making.
