Step back in time as General Lafayette makes his grand arrival by horse-drawn carriage at Johnson Square, just as he did two centuries ago. The Georgia SAR Color Guard and militia will once again present colors, and engage in a musket firing, setting the stage for a formal welcome by Savannah’s civic leaders.
One of the most poignant moments of the event will be Lafayette’s personal recognition of James Armistead Lafayette, the formerly enslaved man who risked his life as a double agent for the Patriot cause. This powerful reenactment highlights Lafayette’s enduring dedication to the ideals of liberty and equality.
As history comes to life, the spirits of Major General Nathanael Greene and Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski—two legendary heroes of the American Revolution—will make their spectral presence known. Witness Lafayette’s reenactment of the cornerstone-laying ceremony for their grave monuments, a solemn act of remembrance he originally conducted in 1825. The event will conclude with the dedication of a Lafayette Historical Marker, ensuring that this legacy endures for future generations.
