In 2023, The American Friends of Lafayette created an Education Committee.
The purpose of this committee is to support our Society goals of Educating, Celebrating, and Commemorating the life and legacy of General Lafayette.
The Education Committee has three programs:
- Lafayette Essay Contest
- Lesson Plans for Public Educational Use
- Educational Conference Involvement
The Education Committee is:
Marcie Taylor-Thoma, PHD - Committee Chair
Jenny Cote - Essay Contest committee co-chair
Susan Meekins-Wolfe - Essay Contest committee co-chair
There are over 40 members of this exceptional committee across the county. These AFL members actively attend conferences and educational events with the purpose of engaging with teachers and administrators to promote the benefits of including Lafayette into their curriculum. These members also give presentations in schools, display our 7-panel Traveling Exhibit, run zoom presentations and more.
Stay tuned for continued, exciting updates!

As of March 1, 2024 we have 110 submissions!!!
Jenny Cote and Susan Meekins-Wolfe have done an amazing job putting together our Lafayette Essay Contest. We have 110 (!!!) registrants and the submission deadline is March 18, 2024. Jenny and Susan are looking for a couple of volunteers to help read and rate the essay submissions. Volunteers will be versed on the rubric tool being used to evaluate each survey. Having a few volunteers would allow us to divide the essays amongst more evaluators. If you are interested in helping, please email Susan Meekins at meekinswolfe@gmail.com. We are VERY excited about this project. It fits our mission perfectly. Please help if you can!
