Yorktown Victory Celebration 2019
October 18th to 20th
Hello American Friends of Lafayette. My sincere hope is that everyone is having a fabulous summer. Now it's time to outline our annual fall get-together: The Yorktown Victory Celebration.
Please note that attached to this email is the Yorktown Day Association Invitation and Response Form here: 2019 Yorktown Day Invitation.pdf
Like most years, we will not have an official hotel for this event. Although hotel rooms in Yorktown are minimal, there are plenty of places to stay in Williamsburg and the surrounding areas. If you can, I'd suggest you stay the evenings of October 18th and 19th as we have events planned for the evening of October 18th through the morning of October 20th. Everything is à la carte, so you can pick and choose what you would like to do.
Festivities will start with a bang on Friday evening, October 18th as the Yorktown Day Association will be holding its annual dinner ($55 pp – invitation attached above). As in recent years, the dinner will be held at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown (200 Water Street). They promise an elegant and delicious dinner with a very entertaining speaker.
Saturday, October 19th begins with an important ceremony sponsored by the AFL and the Friends of Rochambeau. At 8:15 am, we will caravan to the French Cemetery (from Surrender Field) near the Yorktown Battlefield to honor the French soldiers who died during the siege of Yorktown. This is a short, yet very moving ceremony that is a must-see.
Following the cemetery observance, we will attend the wreath-laying ceremony at the French Memorial in memory of the French veterans who served in the American Revolution.
Shortly after the French Memorial Ceremony, the very special Yorktown Day Parade takes place down Main Street. The AFL will again join the parade and I will be looking for participants. There are few better examples of Americana than this parade. Look for a separate email with parade details.
The parade ends at the Yorktown Victory Monument where the annual patriotic exercises take place. The pomp and circumstance are significant as hundreds gather to celebrate the victory that propelled Americans towards full independence. The exercises start with a military flag ceremony and singing of both French and American anthems. Attendees are treated to several speakers, both military and civilian.
Afterwards AFL members can lunch at the historic DAR Custom House ($35 pp – invitation attached above) or there are many other eating establishments in Yorktown to choose from.
In the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to visit the studio of artist Cyd Player...the very artist who brought Lafayette to life on the Yorktown waterfront. This time Cyd is adding Rochambeau to this statuary hall of fame and you'll be able to see her progress up close and personal. More on this in a separate email.
Later that evening (5:00pm) we will hold our world-famous AFL cocktail party ($20 pp at the door). This year's party will again take place at the Hornsby House Inn. The Bowditchs will spoil us with delectable food and drink.
On Sunday morning, October 20th, AFL members will be provided a Lafayette-relevant walking tour of Historic Williamsburg. More on this in a separate email.
Next month I will send out a logistics email. I'll answer all of your questions on where to be and when. I'll let you know where to park and how to get there. This will be a wonderful Yorktown Victory Celebration.
For now, please mail in the attached (page three) RSVP form right away. The deadline for submission is September 30th.
